These days, it seems as though we’re still eating ice cream and having summer days out still when the fashion retailers in the UK start wheeling out their Autumn Winter stock.  It’s been no different with AW15.  For the last few weeks I’ve been doing a bit of window shopping around York, Newcastle, Leeds and London and nipping into some of my favourite retailers to see what’s what for the coming season. I’ve been surreptitiously ‘snapping’ with my phone at items I like and general colour schemes.

COLOURS

I’ve noticed some nice colour combinations in fashion displays in the shops.  Hobbs, for example had a strong focus on red.  A good colour to brighten up even the dullest winter day.  Red looks good on a lot of people and this stock will be popular.

Hobbs also focussed on shades of navy and blue with neutral colours.  A stone coloured trench with a chambray shirt, for example.  They also dropped in another key colour for AW15 every now and then in their displays – burgundy.

Note how they use tan accessories with navy – a classic combination!

One colour that seemed to make a comeback in the summer was yellow and it shows no sign of disappearing.  It seems to have slipped into some of the collections for AW15.  You’re either a lover of yellow or not.  I have to admit that it’s not a colour I would have ever been drawn to naturally before, but I did try a couple of pieces in the summer and really loved them.  I think it’s all about finding the right shade of yellow that suits your skin tone.  Anyway, I’ve seen a few nice colour pairings As you’ll see below.

In Cath Kidston I found this cute yellow rose skirt which I really liked. They have gone for yellow grey which works well together.

In Jigsaw this lovely ochre tencel raglan sleeve top. They are going for yellow paired with navy.

In Fenwicks (Newcastle) Weekend MaxMara paired a more acid yellow with pale greys and dogtooth checks, which was similar to…….

…. a more affordable take on the theme in Tu at Sainsburys. Here a mustard shade of yellow was displayed with dogtooth checks

50 Shades of Grey were evident in most shops I visited.  Luckily there was nothing particularly racy about this!!  From the palest silver grey to charcoal, this seems to still be popular and most people can find a shade of grey which suits their complexion. It’s a good neutral colour which can be mixed with other subtle neutrals like black and navy or mixed up a bit with brighter colours.

In Fenwicks (Newcastle) both Boss and MaxMara focussed on neutral shades including grey. MaxMara (below left) also had a beautiful navy duffle coat which was displayed alongside grey cashmere knits and jeans.  DKNY (below right) also displayed ivory and pale beiges alongside charcoal knits.

Hobbs (below) also went for the classic grey and navy combination.

However, in spite of all this, I think my favourite shades are those that are what I would traditionally associate with Autumn.  Mirroring the changing colours of leaves on the trees that I can see from my office window right now as I look across to the park.  The next image (taken yesterday at Marks and Spencer at Marble Arch) demonstrates those colours that are some of the ‘stand out’ shades for Autumn.

Gorgeous leather gloves in burgundy, forest green, mustard and tan.  These really represent Autumn for me and, given I have a lot of these shades in my wardrobe already, I’ll be focussing on these for my casual wardrobe for AW15.

Eileen Fisher (in Fenwicks) going for shades of berry and mustard shades.

Pure Collection always have beautiful cashmere and I particularly like the orange spice and cinnamon shades here.

So, what colours have you been drawn to from the new AW15 collections.  Do you think some shades are restrictive to certain skin types?  What will you be buying?  I’d love to know!
